These are the contenders for the 2023 Oscars

This is a sensation for a German film: 'Nothing New in the West' by director Edward Berger is equal to nine Oscar nominations, including in the top category Best Picture and in the category International Feature Film, the category for the best non-US contribution. This was announced on January 24, 2023 by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences, AMPAS for short, which hosts the Oscars every year in Los Angeles.

Director Edward Berger was 'a bit overwhelmed', as he told the German Press Agency (dpa) on the phone. He is currently shooting his next film 'Conclave' in Italy. He also commented on his nomination on Instagram with the words: ' Forever grateful Academy and congratulations to the team.”

And indeed, some of the team have chances in the Oscar race. In many years past, German directors were lucky if their film was even nominated for a “Foreign Oscar” in the “Best International Film” category. “Nothing New in the West” also received other nominations: in the areas of camera, make-up & hairstyling, production design, sound, visual effects and adapted screenplay. The haunting soundtrack by German composer Volker Bertelmann, also known by his stage name Hauschka, was also nominated for best film music. In 2017 he was nominated for an Oscar together with his US colleague Dustin O'Halloran for the soundtrack to the film 'Lion'. But at the time they went empty-handed.

But the competition is tough. “Everything Everywhere All at Once” had the most nominations. The film has been nominated eleven times. 'The Banshees of Inisherin' has received nine nominations, the same number as 'All Quiet on the West'.

The last German Oscar triumph was 15 years ago – 'The Lives of Others'

'Nothing New in the West' is the first German screen adaptation of the novel of the same name by Erich Maria Remarque from 1929. The film shows the horror of the First World War from the perspective of a young soldier with aesthetically overstylized but very strong images. Austrian Felix Kammerer plays the leading role. In the actor categories, however, other films scooped up the nominations.

In 2022, Germany started with the tragic comedy “I am your human”, but the film by director Maria Schrader did not make it into the final round of nominees. Germany's last success in this Oscar category was more than 15 years ago: in 2007 Florian Henckel won a golden boy from Donnersmarck's Stasi drama 'The Lives of Others'.

The 95th Academy Awards will be held on March 12, 2023 at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
