What has been written about this film before anyone even saw it! In the eye of the storm: Director Olivia Wilde (38, directorial debut: 'Booksmart') and her allegedly hot affair with singer Harry Styles (28) on the set . According to rumors, leading actress Florence Pugh (26) found it uncomfortable that her director and co-star flirted during the breaks in filming. And in between, Wilde's boyfriend at the time, Jason Sudeikis, came by on the set with their children and later had her custody papers served in front of an audience . Scandal! But how is the movie now? Does 'Don't Worry Darling' see the Bad Vibrations on set?
Do not worry! Olivia Wilde's film isn't a total letdown, but entertaining eye candy with a strong leading actress. But Harry Styles in a leading role isn't exactly one of the film's strengths. He and Florence Pugh play the young couple Jack and Alice, who seem to be living the American Dream in a 1950s test-tube town. Like all men, he leaves the house in the morning with his briefcase and makes a steep career in a top-secret project, she does the housework and hangs out with the other wives at the pool. After the cocktail with neighbors, the two lovebirds attack each other.
When Jack's mysterious boss Frank (Chris Pine) watches them one day and neighbor KiKi (Margaret) cuts her throat in front of her eyes, Alice begins to sniff behind the facades of the idyll. Why is she the only one who wants to know about KiKi? Is there something fishy here, or can't she trust her own perception?
Olivia Wilde originally wanted to play Alice herself. Can't imagine what would have happened then! Even so, it was a wise decision on her part to play the rather pale role of Alice's friend Bunny herself and hire Florence Pugh to star. She has already impressively shown in 'Little Women' or 'Black Widow' that she can embody sensuality and strength at the same time and shows here again completely new facets of her very physical play. Whether she smiles irritated by cocktails or dives feverishly and sweaty through a desert in James Bond manner - Florence Pugh is always believable and looks incredibly sexy in her retro dresses.
The men, on the other hand, remain colourless. It's part of the film's concept, but Chris Pine isn't really challenged as a handsome mean guy, and Harry Styles, who cut a good figure in his acting debut 'Dunkirk', sometimes seems overwhelmed with his part. And he just doesn't have one Chance against Florence Pugh who's just so much more present. But she also plays the main character. Sometimes we get the feeling that the director has no interest in putting him in the right light.
On the other hand, I can't imagine what the gossip would have said if Olivia Wilde had really celebrated her alleged new boyfriend's on-screen attractiveness. The whole buzz about the love affair didn't do the start of the film any good. Because if you only look at Olivia Wilde and Harry Styles on screen, you're missing out on the best.
'Don't Worry Darling' is one thing above all: a Florence Pugh show with first-class visuals, which does have a few lengths and a resolution that can be discussed. But then at least we can talk about something other than love affairs and 'spitting attacks'.
