The „Golden Globes“ are THE first big event of the still young year 2023. For the 80th time the 'Hollywood Foreign Press Association' presented the awards on the night of January 11th. The rendezvous of the stars and starlets provided plenty of topics for the online community to talk about. An already legendary opening monologue, SMS terror on stage and barbiecore on the red carpet – we've summarized everything you need to know about the Hollywood event.
The Golden Globes Opening Speech: 'I'm Here Because I'm Black'
After the Oscars, the Golden Globes are probably the most glamorous major event for the film and acting industry. This year, comedian Jerrod Carmichael hosted the show, and the 35-year-old wasted no time addressing the turbulent history of the awards ceremony in his opening monologue.
'I'll tell you why I'm here. I'm here because I'm black,' he teased the organizers. 'One minute you're making mint tea at home, the next you're being invited to be the black face of an embattled white organization. Life really rolls over you sometimes,' he said. The comedian alluded to the criticism of the past few years. Many actors had criticized the lack of diversity at the Golden Globes and therefore boycotted the event.
The 61-year-old explained on stage that she was afraid of falling and breaking something on the slippery floor. So when it was suggested in advance that she could wear Crocs, she said: 'Crocs with a Dolce & Gabbana dress?' All the Italians in the room would go nuts, according to Jennifer. And it continued funny: When she was young, the actress thought that she would be 'Queen of Monaco' one day, but someone beat her to it. But the role in 'The White Lotus' has now changed her life, because since then her neighbors have finally been able to talk to her and she has been invited to a lot of parties, the award winner explained to the amused audience.
Austin Butler will never be able to speak without an Elvis accent again
Austin Butler was recognized for his portrayal of „Elvis“ in the film of the same name nominated for best leading actor. The shooting must have shaped him in such a way that he can't shake the typical Elvis tongue. When the 31-year-old accepted his 'Golden Globe', it was almost as if the 'King of Rock'n'Roll' were giving the acceptance speech himself. Austin began by saying 'My boy, my boy' - Elvis couldn't have said it better.
And not only that: the actor made a touching declaration of love for Presley's wife Priscilla (77) and daughter Lisa Marie (54). 'I love you forever,' he called to the women from the stage.
Angela Bassett is disturbed by text messages
SMS terror at Angela Bassett! The moment the 64-year-old was awarded Best Supporting Actress for her role in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, she was apparently showered with congratulatory messages on her cell phone. 'Stop texting me!' Says the actress before accepting the award from her colleague Jennifer Hudson (41).
The actress made history with her award for becoming the first person to be nominated for a role in a Marvel film and to win.
Margot Robbie in a Barbie Core gown on the red carpet
until Margot Robbie in 'Barbie' when the famous doll will be seen, we have to be patient a little longer. However, the actress - who was nominated for the film 'Babylon' at the 2023 Golden Globes - seems to have also embraced the pink Barbie lifestyle: Margot appeared on the red carpet in an extravagant Barbiecore gown. It should have taken no less than 750 hours to make the Chanel dress.
In an interview with a reporter from the industry magazine Variety, the 32-year-old revealed that fans can look forward to even more colorful Barbie looks in the finished film. 'I spoke to Greta [Gerwig] (director of the Barbie movie, ed.). She told me there are so many more Ken looks that none of us have seen,' the reporter said. 'So much more of everything you all haven't seen yet. You won't be disappointed,' Margot added. The film will start in German cinemas on July 20, 2023. (tma)
