'New Kids on the Block' singer Jonathan Knight (54) said in a podcast that he was forced to hide his homosexuality when the band was successful. So he is not an isolated case. The same happened to other boy band members, as we show here.

Jonathan Knight: 'It was just so much pressure'

The boy band 'New Kids On The Block' turned the heads of numerous girls in the 80s with their hits 'Hangin' Tough' and 'Step by Step'. But not all band members were into the female gender. Singer Jonathan Knight came out as gay many years after the boy band ended and married his longtime partner Harley Rodriguez in 2022.

In the podcast 'Frosted Tips' Jonathan spoke openly about his difficult coming out. The manager at the time knew he was gay. But: 'He pulled me aside and said: 'If anyone finds out, then your career is over, then the career of the New Kids is over'.' And record giant Sony will also lose a lot of money. 'There was just so much pressure,' Knight recalls.

He is not alone in this - many other boy band stars only came out after the end of their boy band career.

'Unfortunately, I don't have a single memory of him that feels really good to me,' says Eloy in a new 'Bunte' interview. 'My coming out was a big problem for him, he thought it was terrible.'

His bandmates all knew that Mark is gay but have never spoken out about it publicly. Only after therapy did Mark realize that he himself had been his 'biggest enemy' when he came out. 'For me, coming out was kind of anti-climax because I was so worried about what everyone would think and I didn't get any negative reactions, everyone I was worried about just didn't care. The most important thing , what I learned was that it was actually all inside me,' he revealed to the Irish Mirror newspaper in 2020.
