After 'Marry Me' another wedding comedy with Jennifer 'Wedding Planner' Lopez. And JLo (53), at least visually, gives everything again, only lolls in tight panties and a crop top for her husband-to-be (Josh Duhamel) to get him back into bed the night before the wedding and shows her enviable curves. But the groom prefers to fiddle with his DIY pineapple lighting and get his mom (Jennifer Coolidge, (Stifler's mom from the American Pie movies) to pick him up. You can tell story-wise, Shotgun Wedding” is still a little room for improvement.
It sounded like a good thing for those who don't like it so teary-eyed when it comes to wedding comedies: a bride and groom 'in their prime', relatively painless humor and plenty of action. Jennifer Lopez plays Darcy, the bride who took her time getting married. The whole thing was much more important to her lover Tom (Josh Duhamel). He is a real 'groomzilla', a fanatical groom who organizes his wedding down to the smallest detail with military precision. Now the two are in the Philippines with the whole wedding party and nothing is going according to plan. Darcy's mom fights with her ex-husband's in-laws and much younger girlfriend, and Darcy's sister gets laid by the best man. And then Darcy's awesome ex (Lenny Kravitz) shows up.
A word of warning at this point: For those who think that's bad, 'Shotgun Wedding' is nothing as a date movie for Valentine's Day. Because when pirates hijack the wedding, it's quite bloodthirsty to get down to business. While the script surprises us with Darcy and her future husband suddenly arguing out of nowhere whether getting married was ever a good idea, all the wedding guests are taken hostage and dumped together in the hotel pool. Then the bride and groom do things together again. Armed with a can of hairspray, they take up the fight quite awkwardly. But with every bully they've killed, our bride and groom are gearing up. And of course, JLo's dress leaves feathers with every hand-to-hand fight, which only makes it look sexier.
Unfortunately, the whole thing looks like a series of action and RomCom set pieces that don't always really fit together and are partly predictable. The gags could use more speed and the characters more depth - and do they really have to stand around in this pool the whole time? We would have liked to have seen more of the island. After all, Jennifer Coolidge, as a loud and talkative monster-in-law, also makes waves in knee-deep water.

Josh Duhamel shows enthusiasm for the game, but as the groom who loves handicrafts, he's more of a sidekick for Jennifer Lopez' tough Darcy, who cuts a fine figure especially in the action scenes. As before in 'Hustlers' as a stripper on the pole or in 'Marry Me' as a dancing pop star, she confidently presents her well-toned hammer body and looks good at least in every shot. After all, director Jason Moore ('Pitch Perfect') celebrates a clearly grown-up woman who doesn't let anything or anyone buy her nerve. But for us she would have liked to have dished out a little less brutally.
